Skidaway Audubon has sponsored and installed Personal Weather Stations (PWS) on the island for years. What started out as a weather monitoring project for residents has grown into a matrix of over 15 neighborhood stations for your use, so that nearly all residents are now within ½ mile of a reliable source of real time weather information.
In 2023, the Landings Association Strategic Water Committee partnered with Skidaway Audubon to run a pilot study of Smart Irrigation Controllers connected to these Personal Weather Stations. The results have been impressive. During the study, irrigation systems connected to the appropriate hyper local weather station experienced a savings of approximately 50% less “run time” compared to a controller with no weather information. This conservation of both potable drinking water and ground well water is an important consideration both for saving water but also for saving money and minimizing salt water intrusion into shallow wells.
This website is organized by tabs at the top of this page. Each tab is intended to provide you with more detailed information on why hyper local weather is an important factor, how to connect to it and how to install a Smart Controller on your property. Hint: It’s not difficult nor expensive.
Note: Mal Welch is a tireless volunteer who headed up Skidaway Audubon as well as the Sustainable Skidaway initiatives for a number of years. In 2023 she and her husband Bill relocated to the Atlanta area to be closer to kids and grandkids. Instead of a bench or other memento, the Audubon board decided to dedicate this project to her, and used the money instead to purchase six additional Tempest weather stations that have now been deployed across The Landings community to fill in gaps in our weather stations coverage.
